A section of the fire suppression system at Ballylumford gas-fired power station was leaking, causing reduced pressure and poor performance of the system.

This leaking 355mm (14-inch) pipe was located underground, beneath a busy area of the plant and was difficult to access. The customer sought a fast solution to the problem because the fire suppression system was so important for the safety of the plant and its workers.

Nu Flow’s Nu Main structural liner was installed quickly and efficiently and a costly shutdown was avoided.

Nu Flow technicians successfully rehabilitated the system without any disruption to the plant or its operation.

Had the customer chosen to repair the system using a conventional pipe replacement, a significant amount of excavation would have been required. This would have taken months to complete, been two-to-three times more expensive and would have been highly disruptive.

Nu Main technique

Stage 1: Specialist pipe-cleaning tools reinstate existing pipe.

Stage 2: Polyester tube liner is cut to length and impregnated with epoxy resin.

Stage 3: Liner rolled around inflatable bladder and pulled or pushed into existing pipe using rods.

Stage 4: Bladder inflates with air, pressing liner to the walls of the pipe where it cures in two to three hours.

Stage 5: Once the material has fully cured, normal ser vice can be resumed after 4 hours.
